Minecraft Movie Cast: Matt Berry in Negotiations to Star Opposite Jason Momoa

According to Deadline, BAFTA winner Matt Berry has entered negotiations to join the live-action Minecraft adaptation. Should the deal be finalized, he will join previously announced leading star Jason Momoa (Fast X).

Berry is best known for his role as vampire Laszlo Cravensworth in FX’s popular What We Do in the Shadows. This would mark his first live-action movie in five years, as he was last seen in Disney’s Christopher Robin. Matt Berry is also currently attached to star in the upcoming stop-motion animated film The Inventor, which will feature the voices of Stephen Fry and Daisy Ridley.

Who’s Involved in the Minecraft Movie?

The Minecraft movie will be directed by Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess. Further details about its plot and characters are still being kept under wraps. The untitled project will see Momoa reunite with Dune producer Mary Parent, who is producing alongside Roy Lee. The late Jill Messick is also receiving a producing credit for her work on the film prior to her passing in 2018. Producers are Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Torfi Frans Olafsson, and Vu Bui, with Todd Hallowell, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza and Jonathan Spaihts executive producing.

The popular video game was released in 2011 and became a global phenomenon. Its success led to Microsoft acquiring Mojang for $2.5 billion. A film based on the series has been in the works for several years with Shawn Levy and Rob McElhenney previously attached.

The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 4, 2025.
